Hi guys. My name is Bill Stark, and apparently you've taken some notice of the version of Affinity I've been playing this season. While that's flattering, I thought I'd take a moment to elucidate some of my thought processes on the season.
It would seem to me there are a lot of posts on here trying to determine which card is better in a vaccuum, Card X or Card Y? I don't find those discussions to be particularly helpful as they often simply devolve into two dedicated camps arguing the positive points of the one card and the negative attributes of the other without making much ground, so here are my thoughts on the deck and some of the apparently scandalous choices I've made in "my" build:
-The format is too diverse to expect Affinity to simply Turn 4 someone every match. Besides the occassionally inconsistent draws it sometimes gets (something like Lands, Worker, Frogmite, Thopter), you just HAVE to expect some form of disruption to get in your way, be it blockers, removal, counters, handkill, landkill, etc. The deck isn't, as is so often true in life, what it is perceived to be, but instead a more nuanced deck that covers some 'gray areas' and can compete past turns 4 and 5. You don't have to have the nuts draw EVERY game or work towards that; instead, I'd rather see either a Plating draw, a Ravager draw, or an Affinity draw with a Shrapnel Blast to finish off the opponent.
-Shrapnel Blast versus Atog: Someone (I think ironically the person with the "Atog" avatar) correctly pointed out that I cut 2 Atogs from the original list for 2 Shrapnel Blasts because TEPS just isn't around that much anymore. Naturally the PTQ I did that in (Indy) saw a TEPS player in the top 8 (incidentally, we IDed in the final round), but I would continue running 4 Shrapnel Blasts in the current environment. Atog is for racing and is real crucial in a format with TEPS, but that deck is just too easily hated out and I don't expect to face it at PTQs.
-Thoughtcast VS. Bauble: This gets back to that "Card X vs. Card Y" problem with discussions, but I don't think I'd cut Thoughtcast for anything not currently banned. Against Boros, Rock, and a number of other matchups in which you're simply trying to win some type of attrition war, Thoughtcast pushes you over the top or keeps you in the game. Sometimes you have the "nuts" Affinity draw and dump your hand on the table turn 3, but that "hand" actually consists of some Spheres, some 0/2s that can't attack, and a 2/2. That's not much of an offense, but if you follow up with two more cards, you might be getting somewhere. Bauble is good for getting Enforcer down early, but I don't consider that a good enough reason to include it, particularly over Thoughtcast. First, what if you don't have the Enforcer? Second, I'm not willing to run a low impact card (Bauble) as part of a two-card combo that doesn't really win the game. Sure having an early Enforcer is "good" but it's only good because it's essentially a turn 2-4 4/4 that's really cheap without sacrificing to accomodate that fact. When you start biasing the deck towards ALWAYS hitting him turn 3 by playing low-impact cards, he actually becomes bad when your opponent realizes a single removal spell on your 4/4 actually nullifies (effectively) the Tormod's Crypt, Ornithopter, and/or Bauble your opponent spent that time playing.
-Krosan Grip VS. other cards: This was actually a suggestion made to me by my friend Tim "Grunch" Gruneich (who actually writes for Londes.com). Rock isn't popular anymore so Darksteel Citadel isn't really called for. When you draw that conclusion, the green splash is essentially free and allows you to play a flexible enchantment/artifact removal spell, a HUGE bonus in this very diverse Extended format. Others have pointed out that there are too many enchantment/artifact problems to bias this card towards Ancient Grudge or Ray of Revelation, and I think Krosan Grip is correct not necessarily for the Split Second, which is useful, but because the CC is 3. Chalice of the Void should almost universally be set at 2 against this deck, shutting down your Naturalize/Disenchant. Grip lets you still address that problem.
-My list VS Taylor Parnell: I don't know Taylor, but he obviously plays Affinity well. The Indy PTQ was one of the tougher ones I've seen in my day. That said, the PTQ prior to that was Minneapolis, where I also top 8ed with Affinity. The reason I got coverage where Taylor didn't, I believe, was the fact that I top 8ed back-to-back PTQs, both 8 round, 160+ events. Taylor's list doesn't seem bad, and I think the post outlining the wide disparity between card choices in Affinity lists that have top 8ed this season explains things pretty well. Drawing a conclusion based on the difference in finishes from the top 8 is a pretty inefficient way to determine which list is better. "Seventh place" represents 5-8, and matchups can make the top 8 SUCH a crap shoot. If you're going to argue those semantics, however, consider into your argument the fact that the guy playing the 7th finishing Affinity build was actually playing his 2nd top 8 with nearly identical lists.
I wouldn't argue those semantics, though.
-Pyrite Spellbomb VS Whatever: Play what you like. Spellbomb was what was in Karsten's original list, and it's been fine so far. If you like Needle or Crypt over it, play those.
That's what I got. Play well to all of you this season. If you're playing this weekend in Madison, I think it's the right play to skip Affinity until the following weekend. The anti-UW decks will be about, and I think Aggro Loam and D. Flow will be all over the place. Being successful with Affinity begs to be a bit fortunate with pairings and I don't think that's going to happen this weekend. The weekend after, however, is a possibility.
If you'll be at Misty Mountain playing in Madison, feel free to say hi. I'll be there.
Regards, Bill Stark
